A breeding programme at Havelock North, New Zealand in the 1970’s developed a series of seedlings from a cross of ‘Gala’ and ‘Splendour’. New Zealand Beauty is the earliest of the series to mature every season showing the characteristic rose-red skin colouration. The New Zealand Beauty is a thin skinned large apple; the flesh is firm and is best consumed relatively quickly after harvest (8 to 10 weeks) than held for long term storage.
